When you put happiness first, all other details seem to fall in place. This wedding of Mikaela and Leigh is a perfect example. So, while wedding planning, Mikaela stuck to what she knew best – happiness, pure and simple. When Mikaela found a Bo and Luca headpiece that took her breath away, she knew it was only a matter of time before the right dress (the Milla gown by Rebecca Schoneveld ) came along to compliment it. The rest of the details fell into place after that, from the simple native foliage wedding centerpieces highlighting the elegant greenery of Tasmania’s Red Feather Inn to the navy satin and gold sequin touches in the bridal party gowns, creating a pop of colour on their lush backdrop, captured by Fred + Hannah, to help you get your creative wheels turning!
There were a few non-traditional details that showed off the couple’s quirky side, too, including the tiered “cheese cake” topped with cheeky Polaroids of the couple. Mikaela – The bride says it was more important that their friends and family have a good time celebrating with them than to get caught up in plans or tradition. “We knew we wanted festivities over formalities,” Mikaela notes.
One of our currently favorite ways to work cheese into your wedding? With a cheese cake. And no, we’re not talking about the sweet kind of cheesecake that you top with strawberries (though we love those too) We love this cheese cake topped with Polaroids of Mikaela and Leigh.
So festive and elegant – Gold Sequin Bridesmaid Dresses
How did the two of you meet?
We actually met online, pre tinder, before it was cool
How did he propose?
Leigh proposed in NYC at a rooftop bar overlooking Manhattan with some of our best friends there, we then went to an amazing restaurant in the Meat Packing District with all of our friends. It was incredible!
How did you choose your dress?
By trial and error. I bought one, returned it, ordered others then decided against them when I found my beautiful slinky dress. I actually bought my Bo and Luca headpiece first and found a dress to complement it.
What made you choose your wedding theme?
We didn’t really have a theme per se, we just knew that we wanted festivities over formalities. We had such a gorgeous venue that we kept everything else simple with beautiful foliage and native Australian flowers.
Why did you choose your wedding and reception venue?
We chose to get married in Tasmania as it is a really beautiful place and it would give our wedding and guests the benefits of a destination wedding without people having to travel too far. As soon as we saw Red feather Inn we fell in love with the venue, gardens, styling, and feel of the place.
Tell us about your reception:
Our reception was a massive party, everyone was on the dance floor and our friend who DJ’d had everyone, young and old, dancing up a storm all night. We had 2 friends as MC’s and they were hilarious as was all of the speeches, particularly our best man speech. There was a whole lot of love and good vibes in the room (marquee).
What reading did you have at your ceremony?
‘The art of marriage‘ and an extract from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
What songs did use throughout your wedding?
My brother played and sang ‘Heartbeats’ by Jose Gonzalez as i walked down the aisle (it was beautiful), our wedding dance was to ‘Latch’ by Sam Smith, and the two songs that went off during the reception was ‘Dont you worry child’ by Swedish House Mafia and ‘Can’d hold us’ by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
Probably sitting at the wedding table during the best man’s speech and looking out and seeing all of our beautiful friends and family who had all travelled to be at our wedding, were all having an amazing time, and feeling so lucky to have met each other and be having such a beautiful wedding.
